Golden Monkey Trekking

Trekking to see the Golden Monkeys is one of the highlights of Volcanoes National Park.  The Golden Monkey Cercopithecus Mitis Kandti is closely related to the Sykes Monkey (the Blue Monkey).  Endemic to high altitude forests the Golden Monkeys are playful and inquisitive.

Among the many populations of Golden Monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, there are two groups that are habituated to human visitors.  One of these groups has an estimated 80 – 100 individual monkeys.  Like Gorilla Trekking, visits take place in the morning and visitors are allowed to stay for 1 hour with the monkeys.  As the number of visitors is not limited, permits can be booked the morning of the trek.  The current fee for Golden Monkey permit is $100 per person.

Volcanoes National Park is located 65 miles from Kigali and can be reached by car (1 ½ hour drive).
